We all know the endings of our favorite movies, right? The Hobbits save Middle Earth from Sauron. Butch and Sundance jump from their hiding places straight into a hail of bullets. “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”
Movies tend to stick to one memorable ending, because that’s what we all love and expect. The story must have a conclusion, and the conclusion must be final. Otherwise, the audience may become confused, or the film’s message may be distorted.
Because filmmaking is such a complicated business, sometimes extras are shot and never used. (That’s what really happens most of the time.) Often, some of that extra footage has something to do with the ending. Maybe a few extra seconds were cut, or a scene wasn’t necessary or didn’t work. Or perhaps there were multiple possibilities for the film’s ending, and only one was used.
Thanks to DVD special features and other avenues, filmmakers can show us all that extra stuff, including all the extra possibilities for the film’s final shot. Maybe the original ending was too confusing for testing audiences and the studio forced adjustments to it, or maybe they weren’t quite sure which ending would work until they put it together, or maybe the movie intentionally contains multiple endings in order to play with its own format. Whatever the reason, there are movies that have more endings than others, and we’ve gathered the best ones together in this list. (Spoiler alert, obviously.)
