Steven Spielberg has directed many of the greatest films of the past 50 years. Jaws. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Catch me if you can. Schindler’s List. Saving Private Ryan. Jurassic Park. Fabelmans. It’s a filmography that would make any director, living or dead, jealous. (Imagine making one of the above films. It was made everyone of them.)
But even if I somehow wished to get a monkey’s paw and erase every movie Steven Spielberg has ever made from history – if suddenly… Lincoln and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and duel and Close Encounters of the Third Kind And God forbid 1941 It never was – Spielberg will remain one of the most important figures in Hollywood history solely on the basis of all the films he directed as a producer.
Spielberg capitalized on his string of early successes by launching his own production company, Amblin Entertainment, in 1980. Amblin released most of Spielberg’s own output over the next 45 years, but the company, and others launched by Spielberg, also released hugely popular films by other directors, with Spielberg lending a helping hand as an executive producer, producer, or sometimes as a writer.
His touch isn’t perfect. It has produced a couple of critical and commercial flops over the years. (I still haven’t completely forgiven him for all that live action transformers Movies I should have seen in the 2000s.) However, Spielberg’s involvement in this film is usually a sign that the film is of high quality and receives a lot of attention – like the 12 best Spielberg films (but no The films below prove it conclusively.
