James Cameron says he swore a “blood oath” to bring big-eyed Alita back to the big screen in a sequel.
It’s been six years already, but it’s a 2019 product Alita: Battle Angelbased on the cyberpunk manga series of the same name by Yukito Kishiro, has not given up on pursuing the sci-fi action film.
In an exclusive interview with empire magazineCameron admits he plans to make “at least one more” Battle Angel movie alongside Robert Rodriguez, who directed the first film.
“I appreciate your loyalty Alita Fans. Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a bloody oath to do at least one more Alita ,” Cameron shares in the new issue of the magazine, on newsstands Thursday (November 20).
But it’s possible that Battle Angel will spread its mecha wings in a third film as well, if the sequel does well.
“Actually, we’re thinking about an architectural design that connects us to a third movie, but we’d be satisfied if we could make another movie,” Cameron explains. “And now that I have a house in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] I think we’ll probably get more serious about this once we finish the mix here in a few weeks.

Of course, nothing is solidified yet, but it all looks promising for the patient Alita Fans – especially considering Rodriguez has also loudly returned to another team Alita film.
Rodriguez appeared on Joe Rogan Podcast Back in May, he revealed that the main set from the first film was still located at his studio. He said, “Yes, we want to do something else for sure. You should come to my studio. That whole city is still in my parking lot. 20-foot ceilings, seven streets. It’s like the biggest set up in the country, if not the world.”
In 2023, co-producer Jon Landau revealed that a sequel was in active development with Rosa Salazar (Alita) returning.

Released in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel The film follows an amnesiac cyborg who, after being revived by a kind scientist, must discover the secrets of her mysterious past in order to navigate her new life on a post-apocalyptic Earth.
The film, which stars Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali and others, received mixed reviews from critics but grossed $405 million worldwide against an estimated $200 million budget.
