Christopher Nolan used “over two million feet of film” to shoot Odyssey.
The 2026 fantasy film will adapt Homer’s Greek epic and is the 55-year-old director’s first project since then. Oppenheimer It’s 2023, and Nolan has now revealed his efforts to bring the story to life on a large scale.
During an interview with empire magazine“I’ve been out there for the last four months,” he said. “We have the cast playing the crew of Odysseus’ ship out there on real waves, in real places. And yes, it’s vast and terrifying and wonderful and benevolent, as the circumstances change.”
“We really wanted to capture how difficult those journeys were for people. The leap of faith taken into an unknown, unmapped world.”
Dark Knight Filming on the open seas was “pretty primitive,” the director joked, adding the film’s principal photography Odyssey It lasted 91 days.
Reflecting on his next film, Nolan explained that he chose to adapt Odyssey Because he wanted to fill “the gaps in cinematic culture.”
“It has a little bit of everything in it,” he said. “I mean it really has all the stories.”
“As a director, you look for loopholes in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before.
“And what I saw was that all this great, legendary cinematic work that I grew up with — the Ray Harryhausen films and other things — I had never seen that done with the kind of heft and credibility that an A-budget and a big production company in Hollywood and IMAX could do.”
Odyssey It follows King of Ithaca Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he struggles to return home after the fall of Troy, facing monsters, gods, and the consequences of his choices along the way.
Meanwhile, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) fight to protect their shattered kingdom while they wait for the man who may never return.

Odyssey It also stars Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway and Elliot Page. Page recently said it was “a pleasure” to reunite with Nolan Odyssey After working in 2010 beginning together.
Speaking at New York Comic Con, the 38-year-old actor said: “I was very excited to think about it for myself.” [The Odyssey] And to ask him to return to work with him.
“I loved working with him beginning And I would love to be a part of this movie. I was completely amazed and excited, and [I] I basically went and met with Chris and talked about the part, and then sat in a room and read the script. “It was a pleasure to be back.”
“Coming back now, as you can imagine, feeling more comfortable in yourself makes these kind of projects more fun. To have the Chris Nolan experience again now means a lot to me selfishly.”
