I just turned ten years old The mummy It was released in May of 1999, and I remember cowering, wide-eyed, behind my giant bag of popcorn covered in Sno-Caps as computer-generated man-eating scarabs terrorized the characters on screen. I couldn’t sleep that night when we got home from the movies, when visions of decrepit mummies and ancient, deadly insects and shrunken men sucking the life out of them flashed through my young brain. I was so scared! I was hooked.
The mummy It’s been one of my favorite movies for a long time, partly because of my eternal nostalgia for the 90s but also because it’s just a great time. It’s that movie feel Like a movie, as Harry Styles might say. And what’s not to like? The film pays homage to the classic adventure films of over the years without feeling like an uninspired revamp.
I’ve got to work! imaginary! Romance! It’s a bit scary too! (For a 10-year-old, anyway, in a horror-beginner kind of way.) It’s the kind of movie I can watch over and over again, anytime, no matter what mood I’m in. It’s like the cinematic equivalent of a comfort meal, but with some actual nutrition — not necessarily the guilty pleasure type of fast food.

Plus, the cast is absolutely stacked. Arnold Vosloo is menacing and sympathetic as Imhotep’s mummy, breathing new life into the classic Universal Pictures monster. Brendan Fraser is the perfect leading man: handsome, funny, and exuding easy charisma and adventurous charm as adventurer Rick O’Connell. Meanwhile, Rachel Weisz infuses the spirit of Old Hollywood’s leading ladies with her ravishing portrayal of the beautiful and spunky Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan. Together, their chemistry is electric.
Following the recent news that Frasier and Weisz are (finally, thankfully) in talks to reprise their roles as Creek and Evie in a new film. mummy Adventure As a long-time fan of the 1999 film and its 2001 sequel, I have a few thoughts (let’s call them polite requests) about what I’d like to see in this long-awaited sequel — as well as what I fervently hope the filmmakers avoid.
Here are five things I hope to see The mummy 4. (or The mummy 3I think if this next rehash it could be forgotten Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.)
1. Rick and Evie are still happily married
Much like Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren Sorcery 90s/2000s series mummy The movies (the first two, anyway) wouldn’t be the same without the undeniable chemistry between Frasier and Weisz as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan. Rick and Evie’s unconditional love for each other is the beating heart of the series, grounding all the fantasy, adventure and horror with something clear and earnest. Their close-knit romance, which began with an enemies-to-lovers trope, gives the audience something to care about outside of the on-screen action.
However, it might be a misguided idea to have Rick and Evie divorce or break up between movies just so they can do the falling-in-love thing again, or have Rick work to win Evie back from a hot new fiancé, or – heaven forbid – introduce a whole new love interest. That’s why I say: Don’t you dare.
We’ve seen it time and time again in the movies: Han and Leia, Gale and Dewey, Indiana and Marion. But we don’t need to do all the on-again, off-again plot, or that tired thing where a guy turns away from his long-time love due to some trauma or personal breakdown (usually involving some hard alcohol), only to find himself again and get her back. Please leave Rick and Evie happily and passionately married. As the fans saw The mummy returnsthey’re as sexy and interesting as they are married with a kid and they were single and flirting with each other in the first movie.
2. David Corenswet as Alex (why not?)
Evie and Rick’s son, Alex, is an important character in the film The mummy universe. He has a big role in The mummy returnsbesides Tomb of the Dragon Emperorthe latter of which attempted to set up the character to take the mantle from Rick Fraser for future films. (As we know, this certainly never happened.)
Unfortunately, actor Luke Ford, who played adult Alex in this film, was not the right person. Now don’t get me wrong: Ford is a competent actor, and he wasn’t the worst part of the movie, but his portrayal of Alex lacked the charisma of characters in this particular franchise. He failed to capture the bright-eyed curiosity and vibrant personality that Alex displayed The mummy returnsHe undoubtedly inherited traits from his parents.
If Alex comes back (which makes sense), can I offer an inspired recasting opportunity? If ever there was an actor who not only looks like, but embodies the energy of a young Fraser, this is it Superman Stars David Corenswet. As Clark Kent, Corensweet embodies the charming, heroic vibe I expect from the son of Rick and Evie O’Connell. Additionally, if the series continues with Alex, Corenswet already has the pieces to continue the series forward. Someone get their agent on the line ASAP!
3. Jonathan goes back to work, of course
In a film full of engaging characters and unforgettable performances (Frasier! Wise! Arnold Vosloo! Oded Fehr! Jonathan Hyde!) you might think that the hero’s romantic brother would get lost in the shuffle as quick comedic relief. But Jonathan, played by John Hannah, Evelyn’s brother, isn’t just sticking up for himself; It’s a standout and a fan favorite in its own right.
Evie’s brother, a gambler and treasure hunter, steals many of the scenes he’s in. A scoundrel with a heart of gold at work, his playboy charm and penchant for a lazy life of luxury are only betrayed by his unexpected courage in the face of the undead menace and his fierce loyalty to his family. His presence was a welcome relief Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – Aside from Frasier, he was the only original cast member returning for the insidious third installment – and no other Rick and Evie adventure would be the same without him unintentionally causing trouble (and, to be fair, helping to get everyone back) outside Of trouble, in his stuttering way). However, I highly expect Hannah to receive a phone call from the producers soon.
4. Imhotep (Listen to me…)
Arnold Vosloo has a magnetic presence in the first two mummy Films that bring Imhotep (again) to life with a unique blend of pathos, sex appeal and terrifying swagger. He brings gravitas and vulnerability to the role while managing to be dangerous and intense. And even though Imhotep is technically dead at this point (ah, again), there’s nothing a simple reading from the Book of the Dead can’t fix!
After the resurrection of Imhotep The mummy returnsa larger-than-life villain, tragically betrayed by his lover Ank-Su Namun, abandons his quest for world domination and returns to the underworld, heartbroken. Before he does so, he shoots Rick and Evie—who refuse to abandon Rick during a moment of mortal danger—a haunting look of grief and longing for what they have, humanizing the once-human man behind the monster.
It’s the perfect setup for Imhotep to eventually return as an anti-hero who must help Rick and Evie confront an even bigger and more dangerous threat than the undead. We’ve seen him work in many films before, from Barbossa to… Pirates of the Caribbean Series for Loki in the MCU and the T-800 in finisher films. While it’s a well-used trope, it would provide an opportunity for the character to return to the screen in a way that makes sense for the story, potentially reclaiming his legacy as he helps save the world this time.
5. Lots of lightness… Make it fun!
There are a number of reasons for 2017 mummy The reboot starring Tom Cruise was a big, fat flop that critics and audiences hated. Her worst crime? He took himself too seriously. boring!
The mummy (1999) embraced its inherent spirit, also turning to the silliness of the 1930s and 1940s serial films that inspired it. It was, quite literally, a blast from start to finish, moving between fun-filled fantasy adventure, high-energy action, and creepy, supernatural horror with style and ease. In contrast, Cruz mummy He was very focused on work, very gloomy and average in tone; It’s neither interesting enough as an adventure film nor scary enough to be an effective horror film. Let’s not make this mistake again.
Freezer mummy The series was also very effortlessly funny, something the new film will benefit from greatly – especially considering that Lee Cronin’s upcoming 2026 film based on the classic monster will be a dark horror film, so those bases are well covered. As for Fraser’s return, I would like to see more lightness and lightness. That’s why some scenes from the 1999 film (“Hey, son! Looks like you’re on the wrong side of the river!”… “I’m a librarian!”) remain memorable to fans to this day.
