One of the Muppets might get their own movie spotlight

The titular character, created by Bonnie Erickson and Frank Oz in the 1970s, has never been the subject of a feature film. Lawrence and Stone will serve as producers with Escola, a Tony Award winner for their hit Broadway play “Oh, Mary!”, set to write the script.

If the movie happens, it will be the first Muppets movie in over a decade; The final film made with Jim Henson’s beloved creations, Most Wanted Dollswas released in 2014. In 2021, Disney+ premiered a one-off TV special, The Haunted Mansion Muppetsloosely based on the Disneyland attraction.
The most recent Disney production to feature some Muppets characters was a Disney+ series called Muppets mayhemwhich focused primarily on the Muppet rock band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. They produced one season of the show, and then canceled it in one ten-episode batch.
When puppets get attention these days, it’s unfortunately in stories like this; Disney is trying and failing to make the long-running franchise relevant again. They’ve gotten a fair amount of negative publicity this year with the Henson final shutout Dolls film, Dummies*3D visionwhich permanently closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park a few months ago, received a fair amount of outcry from longtime Muppets fans. (Characters are being added to another ride at the park, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.)
When asked if Lawrence and Stone would appear in the film alongside Miss Piggy, Lawrence said, “I think so. We have to do it.”
