When it comes to historical biopics, especially those about famous musicians, there’s a lot of stinky stuff. The greatness of the music alone is perhaps enough of a crutch for even the most mediocre of these films to be made – and look at the music in them bohemian rhapsody is the best part of this movie – but at a certain point these movies become a weird star vehicle for actors to chase award nominations, with plots lifted straight from their Wikipedia pages, and nothing more.
However, even in the most boring genre, there are some standouts, and there are plenty of biographies of musicians we know and love that are fascinating. Even apart from the music, which is almost always a good enough reason to at least get a ticket, the really good examples of the genre give something new to the biopic format. They may focus on an unexpected aspect of that person’s life. They may be told from the opponent’s perspective. They may take a hackneyed, arcane approach to history, finding new angles to dramatize familiar themes.
This list expands the meaning of “biography” a bit: some of the films included here are not the full account of a person’s life, but rather a small portion of it exaggerated on a cinematic scale. They’re all really good, and they’ve kept this kind of down to Oscar bait level. (The only reason we left Walk hardis arguably the best musician-centric biopic ever made, due to the inescapable fact that Dewey Cox, unfortunately, is not real.)
