We’ve all heard plenty of horror stories about hit films riding the wave of critical and box office acclaim, announcing a host of planned sequels that then get shelved, stuck in development hell for decades, or simply never get released at all. There’s really only one foolproof way to prevent this well-known phenomenon: create all of your movies at the same time.
This isn’t exactly possible for your average production — most directors and actors focus on making one movie at a time — but for movie franchises that have big studio money, beloved stars, and veteran directors, it happens more often than you’d think. Production companies usually use this tactic when there is a sequel to a successful first film, but sometimes the first film and its sequel (or sequel) are produced simultaneously, both to simplify the production process and to ensure that there is something that will actually be released when production is finished.
This is called “back to back” production, and it has a lot of perks. Viewers won’t have to wait long to see the next film in the series. Studios can save money by transporting everyone to and from the set just once. The plot across the films will make more sense because they were written and filmed at the same time. Later films would have a cohesive design aesthetic, and would visually appear to be multiple parts of a whole. Here we’ve rounded up ten of the most famous back-to-back film productions in cinema history, and explained exactly why they did it.
